Old Photo Restoration
Repair an old photo in its original tones or explore a gently colorized version.
What restoration can change
Damage and fading
The model can rebuild scratches, folds, dust spots and faded areas using nearby visible detail. Results depend on how much of the original remains.
Optional color
Choose Restore & colorize to add plausible colors to skin, clothing and surroundings. Those colors are guesses, not a record of the original scene.
Missing detail
Where a face, pattern or background is gone, the model fills it in. It cannot recover what was truly there, so compare people and any text with the source.
Use a clear scan or a straight, glare-free photo of the full print. Keep the original visible and within the upload size limit so the model has the best available reference.
Questions about restoring old photos
- Will faces still look like my family?
- The model follows visible features, but a face that is tiny, blurred or partly missing may change. Check faces before printing or sharing the result.
- Can it recover detail that is no longer visible?
- No. Missing information is inferred from the surrounding image; the result may look complete without being historically exact.
- Should I keep it monochrome or colorize it?
- Keep the original tones when documentary accuracy matters. Colorize for a plausible interpretation, then compare it with the source; the original colors cannot be known from a monochrome photo.
